Hi, my name is Alex, and I'm glad you're reading this. We all have blind spots when it comes to our self-concept, which is why it can be a good idea to seek support from someone who can reflect, validate and challenge our experiences. Clinical knowledge and experience play roles in a counseling relationship, but so do life experience, humor, intuition, and all the other traits I try to bring with me to a session. As a long-time writing teacher and certified “music nerd,” I am also interested in how various expressive arts intersect with my clinical work in ways that both build the therapeutic alliance and help you gain insight into yourself and your relationships.
I view therapy from a humanistic, trauma-informed lens. Interventions tend to focus on cognitive-behavioral, narrative, EMDR, ego state, solution-focused, and relational-cultural approaches. When it's appropriate, I also help clients sort through and reprocess complex developmental, psychological and cultural trauma using Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). I am an EMDRIA-certified therapist, and I'm working on becoming an EMDR supervisor.
Personally, I'm a married father of 4. My children range in age from 5 to 24, which gives me plenty of perspective when it comes to young people. I love skiing, backpacking, golf, reading, Colorado professional sports, and cooking in my kitchen or in my wood-fired, outdoor pizza oven.
