I am a trauma therapist in Broomfield, Colorado. I have been in the field since 2013, and actively engaged in trauma work since 2017. I have been practicing eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) since 2018. In my work with EMDR, I have received additional training in depression, anxiety, phobias, parts work, trauma in the perinatal period, and perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs). I am working towards a perinatal health certification with Postpartum International.
We all have things in our lives that we wish hadn't happened. Experiencing challenging or traumatic events is incredibly difficult in and of itself, and the continued physical and emotional fallout from these events makes it even harder to feel like yourself. Fortunately, the effects of trauma aren't something you have to continue living with. With hard work, preparation, and lots of support through the EMDR process, you can feel better.
Becoming a parent is hard too. There are many things that go along with bringing a new human into your life. There is the beauty and wonder of becoming a parent, and there can also be a loss of a sense of self and identity. Suddenly there are unspoken expectations about being a "perfect parent" that are unachievable, and make it feel impossible to make everyone happy. This loss of identity, among other contributing factors, can lead to symptoms of postpartum depression and anxiety. Sometimes postpartum depression and anxiety begin specifically in the perinatal period (from preconception to toddlerhood, though frequently start in the third trimester), and sometimes they have roots earlier in life. The good news is that regardless of origin, PMADs and trauma are treatable. You can learn to weave who you are as a parent in with who you used to be, and who you want to become.
