I’m a queer first-gen Korean American East Coaster who has been working in direct care for over 15 years — over eight of those years as a mental health and substance-use therapist in community mental health. I’ve been privileged to witness so much of the human experience with people of various identities, including refugees, the unhoused, sex workers, people living with HIV/AIDS, those with legal involvement, and QTBIPOC folks. My personal and professional experiences, in addition to my undergraduate degree in public health, have deeply informed my relational and systemic therapeutic approach. Your inner world AND the outside world matter in our work together because your identities shape your lived experience and how the world has responded to your existence. If you’re a person looking for support to be your most relational and resilient self so that you can show up to help usher in a new world, I'd love to work with you.
As someone who exists in this timeline with you and is also experiencing the bleakness of the present, I like to co-create space to feel the expansiveness of human emotions, particularly grief, joy, and rage. We’ll also cultivate a practice of how you can maintain connection to yourself and your community in the midst of these big feelings. I believe in addressing the ways therapy/the mental health industrial complex has been used to harm and control people, particularly BIPOC, disabled, queer, and trans folks. With all this in mind, I aim to foster bodily and mental autonomy in care. Together, we’ll explore your relationship with your physical and spiritual body, how your internal system participates in your decision-making, and how those choices are connected to oppressive and/or liberatory ideologies. This extends to my ethos around substance use and body image (from a Health at Every Size, or HAES, perspective).
I am drawn to working with those who have been pushed to the margins, people who’ve been historically oppressed, and/or anyone who wants to do trauma work through an intersectional lens. I also welcome those with privileged identities who would like to explore and engage in liberatory work, as we are all breathing the air of white supremacy. The goal is not to guilt us into being different, but to free us from what has kept us disconnected from ourselves and from others.
My formally recognized education includes a Master’s degree in International Disaster Psychology: Trauma and Global Mental Health, addiction counselor training and license, Level 2 Internal Family Systems (IFS) training, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) training. My self-led education is informed by Black writers and activists (including bell hooks, Audre Lorde, adrienne maree brown, James Baldwin, and Dr. Jennifer Mullan), as well as liberatory movements of past and present (power and land back to the people of Palestine, Sudan, Congo, this occupied land we call the US, and beyond).
