I’ve known since an early age that working with kids would be in my future. I’ve always been a mover and a shaker, and I pride myself on my ability to match childlike energy, get on their level, and create the feelings of safety needed for exploration without judgement.
During my time at the University of Denver, I interned with Fostering Healthy Futures, an evidence-based development program working with children who have experienced out of home care. This eventually led to work as a Community Champion, focused on ingratiating FHF as a more permanent resource in the Durango community. After two years in private practice doing play therapy, I worked as a child therapist for the Department of Human Services. I continued my work as a child/adolescent therapist in private practice in Oregon, mainly utilizing Synergetic Play Therapy and Parent-Child Interaction Therapy principles to inform my practice. I have also been trained in TraumaPlay, Integrative Attachment Family Therapy, SandTray and CBT.
The core tenants of my practice are built around the notion that when words fail, play prevails. It’s our first language and the foundation with which we communicate, process, and express our inner world. Adult soccer league, crochet, and rockhounding are all examples of adults using play and movement as a regulator, signaling back to what the youngest parts of ourselves know to be most healing- using movement and play to express and progress. I believe that using a whole system approach is essential to understanding and mitigating big behaviors, so I work closely with parents to increase confidence, gain peace of mind, and develop trust and safety needed to repair and solidify the child-caregiver relationship.
